Egypt, Saudi Arabia win ICAO Council membership

 

MONTREAL - The Arab Republic of Egypt and Saudi Arabia win the elections of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) during the 40th General Assembly meeting;

 

 Egypt maintained its seat on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and won membership of the Council in the second category for three years.

 

Egypt was the first Arab and African country with 154 votes out of 167 votes for the Member States, which enhances its position among the Arab and African countries in the ICAO.

 

Egypt is one of the leading countries that joined the ICAO and signed the Chicago Convention in 1947, said Younis al-Masri, Minister of Transport of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to the media, adding that there is close cooperation between the Egyptian aviation sector and ICAO in the field of civil aviation safety and security. Egypt is complying with the rules, recommendations and legislation of the Organization, adopts all its initiatives, and supports them by all technical means in order to achieve its strategic objectives in terms of international civil aviation safety and security and sustainable growth of air transport.

 

On the other hand, Dr. Nabil Al-Amoudi, Minister of Transport and Chairman of the General Authority of Aviation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said that the Kingdom´s victory reflects the appreciation of ICAO member states of the importance of the Kingdom´s positive role and efforts in dealing with the air transport industry realities.

 

His Excellency Mr. Abdul Hadi Al Mansouri, Chairman of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, said that the Kingdom has been winning successively since 1986 until now in the elections held every three years.

 

He pointed out that this successive win clearly reflects the prestigious international status enjoyed by the Kingdom in civil aviation international forums, especially the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), pointing out that the Kingdom has never been late in participating in providing support to ICAO programs and plans and participation of Saudi experts in specialized committees and task forces.

 

The Kingdom also hosts the permanent headquarters of the MENA RSOO of ICAO, as well as the permanent headquarters of the ICAO CASP-MID.

He referred to what Saudi Arabia has provided in the field of civil aviation environment protection, as it is one of the first countries that announced its voluntary membership in the Global Plan for Carbon Compensation and Reduction in International Aviation (CORSIA). The kingdom has also endeavored to ICAO´s ambitious project to develop conventional aviation fuel to reach "low carbon aviation fuel."

 

The 40th session of the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is one of the specialized United Nations organizations, and the International Forum for civil aviation will be held during the period (24 September - 4 October 2019) in Montreal, Canada, with the participation of more than 193 countries.

 

ICAO promotes the air transport industry as a major engine of the global economy and aims to develop technical principles and rules relating to international air navigation, support the planning and development of international air transport, and promote the advancement of air routes, airports and air navigation facilities for the international civil aviation.
